The goal for language education in the Region, is to make Sugt’stun part of the preschool to high school curriculum of schools in the Chugach Region.
Working towards this, the Heritage Preservation Program has a Regional Language Coordinator and Master Speaker who work with the program’s Sugt’stun teachers to increase their fluency, create language curriculum for students ranging from Pre-K12, and work with schools of the Region to hold Sugt’stun classes. Each teacher is also enrolled in college coursework to work towards earning an Occupational Education Endorsement (OEC) in Sugt’stun through the University of Alaska.
Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
