Chugach School District, Ancestry Kit, 7.29.15 BM (4)The heritage component of the Langakillu: Becoming Aware is teaching youth of all grade levels and young parents about the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of their ancestors. This will be done through the use of Heritage Kits which will utilize developed curriculum, books, objects, inter-active digital experiences, and field experiences lead by tribal Elders and professional scientists. The use of TEK to improve student performance and interest in science is documented repeatedly by the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative.

These Heritage Kits are loaned out to schools and museums and have curriculum from pre-school through high school. The program currently has 22 kits and expect to have an additional 5 kits by the summer of 2018.

Llangarlluni: Becoming Aware

Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
